Photography is something I discovered in high school and found again in my second phase of college when I turned 21 and moved across country from Cape Cod to Albuquerque, NM. It became a part of my freedom and my self-definition as I forged a life in the desert, something incredibly bold for one who never ventured much "over the bridge" prior to that time. My first inspiration with photography was a lecture class by Eugenia Janis. She had such a passion for the art of photography, and she opened a world up to me. As I continued learning the history of the art, I crafted my own. Following graduation, I worked for a year of intensive "portrait training" at Kim Jew Photography in Albuquerque, where I learned lighting and cameras and how to flatter people with lighting as opposed to the character portraits I was used to creating.
After comfortably hanging around out West for perhaps too long, I up and threw myself into the insanity of NYC. I started working in a restaurant as a hostess and luckily met a lot of photographers there as it was in the "photo district" near the Flatiron Building. Andrew French is the first one who gave me assisting work and started me on the path out of the restaurant biz and into what was important. From then on I assisted many photographers such as Kenneth Chen, who shoots food and travel for New York Magazine, and other various magazine, still-life catalog, and even wedding photographers.
I was then hired by fashion/celebrity photographer Michael Thompson, his talent seen on the covers of Allure and W, as well as many others. I had the privilege of being trusted as his studio manager for two years during which time I learned so much about the celebrity and fashion industry from the highest level. It was an incredible experience, but the pace of NYC exhausted me after a while.
In search of some peaceful living, I returned to Cape Cod to just exist for a while in the comfort of home. Soon after that I realized the potential in portraiture here on Cape Cod, and headed to the beach to create portraits for people who truly value a beautiful document of their family taken at a place as special as the Cape.
2009 will be my seventh summer photographing on the beaches of the Cape. I am thrilled to have opened my new studio space in Yarmouthport in July of 2007.
